Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar (M.P.)
(Formerly University of Saugor)
(Management Programme Recognised by the All-India
Council for Technical Education, New Delhi)
THE UNIVERSITY
Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar is the oldest
University in the State of Madhya Pradesh established in the year 1946.
It is situated on the green surroundings of the city of Sagar, over an
area of some 2000 acres of sprawling hillside, and commands a scenic view
of the city of Sagar and surroundings. A comparison is often made with
the settings of a hill station. It is in these environs that one of the
largest centres of learning in the country is situated. The varied streams
of specialization include 36 University Teaching Departments organised
efficiently at Sagar. Most of departments have completed more than
40 years of their service to the academic world. In fact, Jabalpur, Raipur,
Rewa and Bilaspur Universities previously formed part of Sagar University,
and were later constituted as separate Universities.
The traditions and cultural fabric that developed
gradually at this University through exquisite contributions from its founder
Dr. Sir Hari Singh Gour are not seen elsewhere. Its qualified, experienced
and committed faculty has helped in developing this university as a reputed
centre of learning with certain rare disciplines that have been established
at this University as long back as in 1946.
THE FOUNDER
Dr. Sir Hari Gour, the venered founder of this University,
was one of the greatest visionaries of education of this century. He had
the distinction of being the Founder - Vice Chancellor of the Universities
at Sagar, Delhi and Pune. However, it is at Sagar that his contribution
is most outstanding. The entire University was established through a personal
contribution made by this great individual, which was in excess of Rupees
One Crore, in 1946. While this amount was, in itself, a colossal sum at
time, it was the spirit behind the noble deed that was truly commendable,
and has inspired a number of people after him towards similar gestures.
To him goes the credit of having put Sagar on the map of the education
scene.
Dr. Gour's was an investment in education, which
has paid rich dividends to all who have had the opportunity of having been
part of this great legacy, either as students of this University, or as
employees. The great man is revered more as a God amongst the alumni of
the University, and the people of Sagar, alike.
THE FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES
The Department was established in May 1982, under
its Founder Head, Prof. R.B.Saxena, as the Department of Applied Economics
and Business Management, as part of the Commerce Department. It conducted
a Full Time MBA Programme. Management Education at the university level
was then in a fledgling state, and hence this beginning was of humble proportions,
with limited classroom space, faculty positions, and in take. The department
has, thus, the distinction of being the first in the state to offer an
MBA Degree. The department prospered under the guidance, and with the untiring
efforts of Prof. Saxena and on his retirement in 1986, Prof. H.C. Sainy
took over as the Head of the Department. The Department has moved from
strength to strength in the years that have followed attaining the status
of a separate faculty, as The faculty of Management Studies, in the year
1989. The foundation stone for the new faculty building, to be constructed
with a combination of UGC Grant and State Government funding, was laid
in the year 1996.
Three-year full time Bachelor of Business Administration
(Hons.) Course, deemed equivalent to graduation, was also started in the
year 1996. This course has the distinction of being the only Honours Programme
being offered by the University, and is totally a professional course,
offering excellent job opportunities to the students on completion of graduation.
