The main building - A panoramic view
Swami Vivekananda said. "you have read - 'Look upon your mother as God; look upon your father as God.' But I say. The poor, the illiterate, the ignorant, the afflicted - let these be your God. Know that the service to these alone  is the highest religion."
It was in response to the clarion call given by Swami Vivekananda that the public of Madras came forward to start a Students' Home for the needy and destitute children, eager for education.

The boys get a balanced diet including Milk,
four times a day.
It was started in 1905 and run under the guidance of Swami Ramakrishnananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna . From a humble beginning it has grown into a big institution.
At Chennai, the Home has about 350 inmates. Of them 200 are students of the residential High school and about 150 of the residential Technical Institute and college section. All the inmates of the Home have not only free education and training but also free boarding and accommodation, medical attention and other facilities.
The Home also runs "Ramakrishna Centenary Primary School" for boys and girls numbering about 250 in Mylapore.
Besides imparting education through curricular and extra curricular activities, the Home enables the students to participate in gardening, social service, excursion and vocational training. They receive religious instruction and spiritual training too.
Most of the students who leave the High school join the Technical Institute, which offers a three-year Diploma course in Mechanical Engineering. Some students are admitted to the College section. They stay in the Home and study in the Higher Secondary School / Colleges situated in and around the city.
Thus once a boy gets admitted his physical, educational and spiritual needs are taken care of. He stays in the Home and continues his education till he is ready for facing life.

So far, 6000 such students and, through them, their families have  benefited by the signal service rendered by the Home.

The thousands of students who have passed through the portals of this Institution bear eloquent testimony to the lasting influence of the training they receive here in their early life. They occupy all walks of life some very high, some ordinary, but they all love to visit the "Home" and recall how greatly they benefited from the early training they got here.
