Sneha is a voluntary organisation founded in 1986 to cater to the befriending needs of the lonely, desperate and the suicidal. It is a branch of Befrienders International founded in the U.K. by Chad Varah in 1953.
Sneha's primary concern is prevention of suicide. People who attempt suicide are caught in a conflict between the wish to live and the urge to die. Hence, suicide is considered a cry for help. It is a form of communication which expresses that those persons who attempt to commit suicide feel lonely, depressed and that life is not worth living. Unfortunately this communication is not listened to by many. Sneha was started precisely for this function of giving unconditional support, warmth and understanding to persons who are in crises. This timely support given at a critical juncture makes it possible to prevent suicide in many cases. In the strife that stress-filled modern life has become, one acutely feels the need to talk to someone who would really understand and appreciate their problems and anxieties. Often, for differing reasons one may not be willing to discuss these with friends and relatives. They will invariably find in Sneha someone who will listen to them with attention, warmth and understanding and unconditionally accept them for what they are.
Anything said or written to Sneha is kept in strict CONFIDENCE. This confidentiality enables people to unburden their feelings without any reservation.
Sneha is run bu volunteers who are carefully selected and trained, having the basic qualities of warmth, tolerence and understanding. It is a non-religious and non-political organisation whose services are totally free of charge. Sneha functions from 8am to 10 pm throughout the year including public holidays. One can contact Sneha in person, through letters or over the telephone
