TAMIL ISAI SANGAM

    From the 7th century upto the 12th century AD, we have a lot of musical compositions in Tamil by the Saiva & the Vaishnava saints. Sambandar, Naavukkarasar, Sundarar, the twelve Alwars, Manickavasagar,Arunagirinadhar, Ramalinga Adigalar, Marimuthu Pillai, Muthu Thandavar, Arunachala Kavi, Oothukkadu Venkatasubbaiar, Mazhavai Subbarama Bhagavathar, Subramania Bharathi, Papanasam Sivan, Periasamy Thooran, Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai, Bharathi Dasan have all rendered beautiful compositions that could very well enrich the musical concerts.
    It is a really sorry state of affair that these compositions are very rarely sung by our musicians in their concerts. From the 16th century onwards TamilNadu was under the rule of Nayaks, Marathas, Muslims & the British whose mother toungue is other than Tamil. Naturally, there was no patronage either of the Govt. or the public. Somehow the Telugu kirthanas of Thiagarajar, one of the musical trinity of Thiruvarur have become very familiar with musicians(whether they understood the meaning or not) & naturally no efforts were taken either by the musicians or the public in rendering/listening the Tamil compositions.
    Aggrieved at this state of affairs, Dr. Raja Sir. Annamalai Chettiar came forward to popularise Tamil compositions in all music concerts & put them back to the prestine glory. The Tamil Isai Sangam, Chennai was founded in 1943. A majestic building in the heart of the city was built to hhouse the Sangam. The Tamil Isai Sangam celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1967 & Golden Jubilee in 1992. The 55th Annual Music Festival is being conducted this year.
