ANALYSIS OF MUSIC FESTIVALS - 1996-'97
The madness continued & Chennai, which was Madras just a year earlier, went JJ ! After a grand event, asked how it was, a Tamilian is apt to answer : "Oh, it was jay-jay!" That's how some might respond if asked about the music & dance festivals season. The connotation of jay-jay would be positive. The 1996-97 mad, mad music & dance festivals season was JJ with the negative connotation also.
    Consider this :
*Fifty-three organisations conducted 60 festivals in a period of 117 days.
*They presented a total of 1604 music & dance performances in this period.
*The total included 134 music concerts & 280 dance performances.
Possibly nowhere else in the world so many organisations conduct so many festivals offering so many music & dance performances in so short a period of time.
It would seem appropriate to call this fantastic. Especially so, considering that nearly all of the funds needed for the programmes is provided by business establishments - a fact which must be emphasised. The Chennai season is not a Govt.-funded extravaganza like the Apna Utsav in New Delhi & the Dakshin festival in Bangalore were. Or the more recent cultural festival mounted in Tanjavur during the World Tamil Conference was. Why, then, should the festivals season be labelled JJ perjoratively?
