The
Iron and Steel Industry of India
The
Iron and Steel Industry in India was earlier categorized as main producer
consisting of various integrated Steel Plants based on BF-BOF Route
and secondary producers consisting of Electric Arc Furnace units, Induction
Furnace units, Rerollers, Stand alone Cold Rolling and GP/GC Sheet units
etc. Besides there are stand alone Pig Iron units, Sponge Iron units,
Wire Drawing units etc. Today there are large units of capacity of one
million tonnes or more based on DRI-EAF or COREX-BOF Route and hence
earlier categorisation is infructuous such as Integrated Steel Plants
based on BF-BOF Route, Units based on BF-BOF Routes, Major Producers
based on EAF/EOF,COREX etc, Mini Steel Plants & Stand alone Finished
Steel Producers, Electric Arc Furnace Units, Rerolling Units, HR Coil
Units, Cold Rolling Units, GP/GC Units and Color coated Units,Tin Plates,
Steel Wire Drawing Industry, Unorganised Sectors, Pig Iron, Sponge Iron,
Alloy and Special Steels, Stainless Steel, Ferro Alloys.
Imports
of Iron & Steel
Iron
& Steel are freely importable as per the Extant Policy.
India
has been annually importing around 1.5 Million Tonnes of steel.
Rising
trend of imports during last few years is indicative of unhindered imports/dumping
from CIS countries.
To
check unbridled cheap imports of steel the Government has fixed floor
prices for
seven items of finished steel viz. HR coils, HR sheets, CR coils, Tinplates,
CRNO and &ASBR.
Anti
dumping duty has been levied on import of HR coils from Russia and Ukraine.
Exports
of Iron & Steel
Iron
& Steel are freely exportable.
Advance
Licensing Scheme allows duty free import of raw materials for exports.
Duty
Exemption Pass Book Scheme also facilitates exports.
Iron
& Steel exports showed a significant increase during last few years.
In
1998-99 exports declined.
Many
steel products were subject to anti-dumping/anti subsidy duties/investigations
in EU/USA during the year.
