India is one of the largest producers of stones especially granite and marble in the world with a share of about 27% of the world production. Not surprising that it is in India that you have the most famous marble and stone monument of them all - The Taj Mahal on the banks of river Jamuna in Agra built with white marble. The major Indian stone products are marble, granite, flaggy limestone (known locally as Kotah Stone), slate and Quartzite. India ranks third in stone exports after Italy and China, and exports comprise principally of granites and marbles. The bulk (90%) of the Indian stone exports is by way rough granite and marble blocks and only about 10% is by way of value added or branded products. Indian stone industry and the Government have set a target of raising this to 50% over the next 5 years. The bulk of the Indian stones are produced in the Indian states of Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Andhrapradesh. Rajasthan accounts for nearly 90% of all the marble produced and the other three states in Southern India produce almost all the granite exported. A Government
Sponsored Centre for Development
of Stones is being set up at Jaipur in Rajasthan which wll act
as a national trade promotion and common resources institution. This centre
will offer testing and grading facilities conforming to ASTM (USA) and
CE (European) standards. It will also link up with bodies like ERICA (Carrara,
Italy).
