USTAD RASHID KHAN
LIVE SUNNY TOWERS - VOL I
About the music on this Album

The first raga of the concert is the Raga Yaman. This late evening raga belongs to the Kalyan Family & is favoured for inauguration of evening concerts for its inherent grandeur. The raga uses the tivra Madhyam & all the sudh notes in its scale. The Dominant Note is the Gandhar & the Nishad is the Subdominant. Raga Yaman is accredited to Amir Khusroo & is one of the most loved ragas of all times. There is a saying that the calibre of a musician can be judged accurately by his exposition of Raga Yaman.
The traditional vilambit ektaal composition "Kaise Kaise Ki" is the perfect medium for Rashid Khan to set the mood & explore the raga & its notes. The Alapchari gives way to different varieties of taans as the artiste toys with the different catch phrases & aspects of the raga. With an increase in tempo, the artiste performs on request, a madhyalay bandish as popular as the raga itself "Aeri Ali Piya Bina" set to teental & then sings the beautiful "Tu Jag men Sharam Rakh meri" as the base for his lightening taankari. The taraana, in ektal at the end of the performance was composed by Ustad Bahadur Hussain Khan Sahib of Rampur. The taraana is, incdentally, the speciality of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana & Rashid uses it to advantage to bring an ecstatic conclusion to a memorable performance of the Raga.

USTAD RASHID KHAN
LIVE AT SUNNY TOWERS - VOL II

About the Music on this Album :
In this album, Ustad Rashid Khan reveals the rich heritage of the Rampur - Sahaswan Gharana through his rendering of the Ragesri, Chhayanat & Desh ragas. With his swaraprayog & spontaneity, Rashid Khan once again demonstrates why he is already regarded as one of the finest musicians of the country today. Rashid Khan kindles memories of his guru Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan with the bandish "Jhanana Jhanana Jhanana Baaje Bichhua" - a composition of Ustad Enayet Hussain Khan, the doyen of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana - in raag Chhayanat. He weaves his magic in raag Desh where he sings another bandish "Karam Kara Dije" composed by Ustad Sabir Hussain Khan, the eldest son of Ustad Enayet Hussain Khan. The taraana that follows bears the indelible stamp of this young torch-bearer of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana.

USTAD RASHID KHAN
LIVE AT SUNNY TOWERS VOL III

About the Music on this Album :
"A recent recital of Bihag in a private soiree where Rashid Khan was being recorded by the newly revived Hindustan (Record) of C.C.Saha fame moved me as nothing has in recent times. His swaraprayog, the timbre of his voice which produces the fortissimo pianissimo effect at will ( wrongly called modulation by us Indians), the emotional content of his music indicate a dignified yet graceful spontaneity which I have not noticed in any other musician of his generation."
"He plays with the key phrases with the instict of a natural musician. His taans cascade like fountains & how wistful he sounds in the higher notes.
Here is a young man born to adorn the world of music in years to come with the unspoiled innocence of a teenager & the maturity of an Ustad far beyond his years.
Rashid Khan has that untranslatable word taseer, the ability to create a genuine impact on his listeneres."
